Arson keeps fire crews busy

A building at West Street School shows scorch marks after a fire Thursday that's being investigated as arson.

Here is a pull quote from the story:

“We caught it early and the damage wasn’t too bad. There were no other structures at the school damaged,” said Fire Chief Martin Spannaus, who estimated damage at $10,000.

“An abandoned old Dodge Van was on fire, and we have evidence it, too, was an arson fire,” Spannaus said. “It appears the fire started from a flammable liquid.”

At 9:14 a.m., the former detective was driving at the intersection of Harding Road and Cherry Street when he saw a man, suspected to be Lynn, climb through a broken garage window of a home on Cherry, the department said.

Lynn attempted to leave out the garage window only to be stopped by the detective, the department said. Lynn then went back into the residence and escaped through a bedroom window. Sheriff's deputies arrived and chased him on foot, losing sight of him in the 1900 block of Jacob Street.
